CLASH

PREP Write freely about the house style of Clash music magazine. Your focus is on 'media language', that is, how the musicians are represented, layout, font, colour and so on.

The Clash cover is very simplistic with bold writing, this makes the magazine look quite serious and artistic this gives the idea that the magazine is for a reader who takes music seriously and is interested in it. There is no clutter on the page compared other music magazines such as mojo it focuses on one artist other than multiple artists on the cover which could attract certain readers.  The edition number is something that stands out quite a lot on the clash cover as we see it almost falling off the magazine, this is unique and is something that Clash has that other magazines don't making it more interesting.

One of the covers on The 1975 shows the lead singer Matty Healy to be looking up into the sky angelically as if he is a holy figure this could help readers who are fans of the artists connect and make them interested in the magazine as they like the way they have portrayed this artist. Some of the other musicians are portrayed in different ways some of which are looking down and away from the camera and some with their faces half covered such as Danny Brown, this makes the magazine different as well as most music magazines will have the musicians looking straight at the camera making eye contact. It seems as though the artists are portrayed in the way of their music which makes it very exciting as you never know what to expect as a reader from this magazine.

The colours on CLASH magazine are also very important to the magazine to symbolise what the musician is like, some of the covers have very simplistic monotone colours while others have red hues or bright yellows showing that their music may be more upbeat and lively than the others which could be more serious.

Please watch this presentation. It explains one of the ways in which the conglomerate Warner Bros marketed its product, The Lego Movie, by creating an ad break. The ad break is one of your required texts set by the exam board.

Warner Bros created ad breaks by changing original adverts that have already been made and they have legofied them to shows the same ad with Lego characters and Lego parts. The 4 advertisements were done for quite well known big brands such as , Confused.com, British Heart Foundation, BT and Premier Inn. This means that the adverts are likely to be seen by a large number of audience and are trusted brands, they will be able to connect the two and see how good the adverts look in Lego and inspire them to see the Lego movie. The advertise will be targeted to a large range of age groups, as young children will enjoy them and adults will enjoy them and find them funny , this is good as they will be the consumer of the product. The adverts also show everyday life and home life including health insurance this makes it relatable for the viewer.

At the end of each ad there is an advert for the Lego Movie itself, this reinforces the idea of it being about Lego and to remind the viewer that its not all about the advert being shown but also about Lego and to try and catch the viewers attention so they want to see the Lego Movie as well.

In the advert for the Lego Movie itself Emmit is portrayed as the main character who is a stereotype male role but there is also a show of Wild Style who is shown as a strong independent women, this could appeal to lots of people especially young girls who aspire to be that way.

PREP: Refer to Extract 1 in the insert. Analyse the representation of Jamaican Reggae music and musicians such as Bob Marley in this MOJO front cover. (5 marks)

This mojo cover shows a clear representation of Jamaican Reggae music and musicians as it has the colours of the Jamaican flag which usually is connected to Reggae music and life style. The green, yellow and red colours stand out very clearly. Bob Marley is shown smiling which is unusual for mojo as it is a more serious and mysterious magazine, this shows the representation of reggae as it is not a serious kind of music and is relaxed. There is a pull quote from Marley quoting 'from gang war to one love'  this shows the peace that comes along with it. As well as the CD cover showing music speakers covered in Reggae stickers.

OBSERVER ONLINE: MESSAGES & VALUES Q.9

Study the online newspaper extract to revise exam Q. 9 (below).
To make this prep quick and easy, all you have to do is copy / paste the text below and identify all relevant articles or features that represent the newspaper's values:
1.  The major use of newspapers is to offer a sense of knowing
what is going on in the world. The Observer knows that its readers are serious and interested in international affairs. This is evident in hard news articles about..... politics / american politics with Donald Trump
2. The Observer meets its audience's need for a range of cultural, sporting and artistic news. It provides these with... music .. 2019 BRIT awards nominations such as Dua Lipa
3. The Observer does not shy away from 'difficult' issues that could make uncomfortable reading, such as... Saudi girl captive and 'fearful' while preparing for Iran Jail hunger strike.
4.  The Observer has sections which are designed to appeal to
different types of readers. The Observer reflects the diversity of its readership in articles on... business , politics and entertainment
5.  Newspaper readership can still be used as a symbol of one’s

social identity. The term ‘Guardian reader’ connotes a certain
type of social attitude and The Observer  similarly reinforces
a set of social and political attitudes, and thus identity, in its
representations. For example, Observer  readers like to think
of themselves as open-minded and this is reflected in the
Observer’s practice of allowing both sides of an argument
equally to be put when the newspaper is clearly on one side
of this argument. There is an example of this in.... The article talks about Labour and how they will be voting which shows the views that the observer have and that they are more left wing as they support labour.

6.  The entertainment function of newspapers may take the

form of humour.  It may take the form of diversion into

a celebrity world of ‘glamour’. It may take the form of human
interest stories in which readers are invited to sympathise with
the subjects of the article. Newspapers further offer games,
puzzles, crosswords and the like. At the higher end, sections
such as the New Review in the Observer may offer the pleasure

of extremely well-written think pieces and literature reviews. An example of this is.... talking about music such as the BRITS nominations.
